Social Isolation a Factor for People Living with a Long-term Brain Injury Disability
An important factor in maintaining health and reducing care needs relates to avoiding isolation and withdrawal from activity. A research study involving individuals living with the long-term (13+ years post-injury) effects of moderate to severe brain injuries observed that:
- 66% required assistance with activities of daily living
- 75% were not able to return to work
- 90% were dissatisfied with the level and content of their social interactions
- 27% were not socializing at home
- 20% never visited others
A high percentage of the individuals in this study were living on their own or with a family member.
